Lagos expands Materials Testing Laboratory mandate to strengthen construction safety
Lagos State has announced new measures to enhance construction quality through an expanded mandate for the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory. Under the revised framework, all large scale developers must undertake mandatory materials certification before beginning structural works. Regular audits will also be conducted at critical stages of construction.
Officials explain that the move responds to public concern over structural failures across the region and aligns with international standards for building integrity. The agency is expected to collaborate more closely with industry engineers, architects and private testing facilities to ensure consistency and prevent substandard practices.
Real estate stakeholders welcome the development, noting that improved oversight will protect lives, reduce financial losses and boost investor confidence.
