Press Statement: Looking Beyond Saboteurs in APC

Press Statement: Looking Beyond Saboteurs in APC

My attention has been drawn to a regrettable statement made by APC National Publicity Secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu, specifically referring to Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State as a bad loser.

While it is not my practice as a Member of the Party in the State to join issues with people over their views, expressing those views as the Party’s Spokesperson is uncharitable, mischievous and bereft of logic and sportsmanship, and lacking in conduct expected of a Party Official, particularly in the light of Presidential directives mandating the National Chairman to “clear his mess” ahead of NWC meeting.

Ogun State is home to illustrious men and women who are personally interested in who becomes the next Governor. It is therefore surprising to see Lanre Issa-Onilu making insensitive and detrimental statements evidencing his uncouth and uncharitable nature, presumably on the Authority of the National Executive Council of our Great Party. Reasonable people will strive for peace at home.

The APC Electoral Guidelines provide for the use of State Party structures in the conduct of primaries. That structure was used for the conduct of primaries to elect all Party flag bearers at Federal and State levels for the forthcoming elections. That exercise clearly produced Honourable Adekunle Abdulkadri Akinlade as the winner and Governorship Candidate of the APC in Ogun State.

It is only reasonable that justice be done everywhere, and particularly in Ogun State where people have always voted their choice candidates, irrespective of choices expressed by leaders. When the people decided they could not vote Osoba for another term in Office as the Governor in the 2003 general elections, his power of incumbency could not save him. He was voted out of Office against all odds.

The NWC should not be interested in imposing a candidate on any State of the Federation. There will be grave consequences for the Party if that fraud is allowed to stand. The National Party Leader is acting like a mole on a mission to damage the Party. Governor Amosun is a man with one vote. Ninety-five percent of Ogun State APC made a choice of Honourable Adekunle Abdulkadri Akinlade as the Governorship flag bearer.

If that choice is not respected, the good people of Ogun State will have no cause to maintain confidence in the leadership of the Party and President Muhammadu Buhari.

People will not forgive APC, and the Party will be trashed as a bad loser at the polls nationwide. Things will fall apart and agent provocateurs such as Lanre Issa-Onilu will simply find a new place for buttered bread.

The national leadership will be well served to respect the decision of the good people of Ogun State in the choice of Honourable Adekunle Abdulkadri Akinlade as the Party’s flag bearer for the 2019 Governorship elections.

Party leaders in the State will do well to close ranks and work together for a common goal. The best interest of the people should be paramount, devoid of distractions. The Party cannot afford to build its campaigns in the general elections on fraud and candidacy the people do not want.
